Many funerals are sold as a package and it can be difficult to work out the price of each component. The Office of Fair Trading argues that prices should be more transparent, so that families can more easily select which parts of a service they would like. Remember Funeral Directors direct funerals, but the supply of coffins, floral tributes and memorials can be sourced independently.
The coffin carries the greatest proportion of the cost of a funeral. The cost price of a standard chipboard coffin fitted out for a funeral, can be ?60-70, but may be sold within a package for as much as ?300.
Which? Magazine suggests that most funeral directors should be able to supply an estimate of a basic funeral, and should not be used if they cannot do so. You should reasonably expect to be given an itemised price list for each part of the funeral, which should include disbursements which are charges made by the Council for cremation or burial.

Getting help with paying for the funeral
If the person responsible for organising the funeral or their partner is receiving certain benefits, financial help may be available if no one else is able to pay for the funeral.
A number of organisations can advise you on how to get help with funeral costs, including:

When a resident of Cardiff dies, their family are entitled to request a Cardiff Council Funeral Service which is a fixed price - low cost dignified funeral service. This is carried out by A. J. Stone and W. M. Ham through a tender agreement on the cost with the Council.
When a person dies in hospital and there is nobody able or willing to arrange and pay for the funeral, the Health Authority may fulfil this obligation.
Similarly, local authorities have a duty to arrange the burial or cremation of anyone who has died in their area when there is no one to make arrangements. The authority can reclaim any expenses incurred from the estate. If there is no estate, a basic but dignified funeral can be arranged which may include burial in an unpurchased grave.

Funeral Plans
Buying a funeral plan in advance from a funeral director or a funeral plan company can for some people take away the worry of paying for a funeral at the time of the death, however the remaining family will still be required to make the necessary funeral arrangements.
There are several plans available all of which require careful consideration. You will need to choose a burial or cremation package that meets your specific needs bearing in mind that that the plan may not incorporate all the costs at the time of its use, such as embalming.
Funeral plans may be paid by instalments or a lump sum, which enables the funeral to be paid at current prices. A grave and memorial can all be purchased in advance, which can help to reduce the ultimate cost of a funeral.
